"Innovation in an Uncertain World" - 9th Annual Technology Ventures Conference

Our future economies depend on cutting edge innovation to add value to society and to solve the biggest challenges facing our planet. The continued support of research and development is essential, particularly at a time when resources – both financial and otherwise – are increasingly under pressure. Yet, as Hewlett-Packard’s recent acquisition of Autonomy demonstrates, big business is still keen to invest in the opportunities being developed in high-tech clusters. Economic growth depends on those who can mobilize concept to realization, and create solutions with new technologies.

For its Technology Ventures Conference 2012, CUTEC will aim to address how the current financial climate is affecting the way new technologies are being developed and brought to market. Following on from TVC2011’s highly successful ‘Open Innovation’ theme, the conference will investigate other innovation models that succeed during lean years. TVC2012 will debate the importance of innovation in an uncertain world by looking at investment strategies and the infrastructure for innovation, focusing on key sectors both within the UK and the global economy.

Topics to be discussed include:

What are the specific challenges of driving innovation in the current climate?

How are successive periods of financial instability affecting high-tech clusters such as Cambridge?

How do we encourage / support innovation with limited resources?

The role of disruptive innovation in generating growth

Innovation on a budget – leveraging efficiency to maximise potential

Is the UK investing enough on innovation? What do we hope to gain from the new Enterprise Hubs?

Delegates will be inspired by lively debates and keynote speeches, highlighting the level of opportunity open to entrepreneurs within high-tech clusters. The conference will act as a forum for delegates to engage and connect, ultimately enabling new relationships through networking that may prove key in future ventures.

International Eco-Technology Partnering

Enterprise Europe North France, in partnership with CD2E the French Environmental Cluster Group, will host an International eco-technologies business partnering event on 12th and 13th June in Lille, France. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with potential partners and customers from around Europe during a series of 30 minute face to face meetings. The event takes place alongside Northern France's two biggest environmental events: Environord and the European Congress on Eco-Technologies for the Future.

Environord is the biggest environment solutions exhibition north of Paris (http://www.salon-environord.com) . In 2011, Environord recorded more than 5700 visitors keen to make contacts with eco-companies, official bodies and local authorities specilised in environment issues relating to air, ground and sediment, water, energy, construction and waste.

The European Congress on Eco-Technologies for the Future (http://www.eco-technologies.org) covers key environmental technology trends such as: developments in existing eco technologies, emergence of new technologies offering eco solutions in different sectors, maturity and risks of these technologies... This conference enables delegates to anticipate which technologies will significantly change the future, whether it be that they have reached a maturity that enables wide-scale implementation, or because they provide a glimpse of tomorrow’s solutions.

Framework Programme 7 - Funding Opportunities relevant to Local Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships and their partner organisations

9:30 – 4:00

Join us to hear more about Framework Programme 7 funding opportunities which are available to Local authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships and relevant partners. FP7 signifies approximately 50 billion Euros of funding available Europe-wide - it could be the funding programme to create significant and long lasting benefits in your local area!

FP7 is the European Union's main research funding instrument and increasingly important to demonstration and innovative pilot initiatives. It supports multidisciplinary research and cooperative trans-national research and development activities in Europe and beyond.

The Framework Programme for Research and Development (FP7) has two main strategic objectives
•    To strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry;
• To encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research that supports EU policies.
Funding is made available to co-finance research, technological development and demonstration projects based on competitive calls.

This seminar will feature a detailed presentation from a specialist UK Consultancy firm with particular expertise in FP7 who will inform us of how FP7 relates to organisational priorities and give you their insider knowledge on the key elements to making a successful and strong application.

Participants will benefit from hearing how organisations like your own have already benefitted from Framework Programme 7 through case study presentations. Such case studies will demonstrate the types of initiatives which have been supported within the Local Government and Economic Development fields of influence with practical hints and tips. Take the opportunity to learn from the first-hand experience of successful project applicants, ask any burning questions and network with project and programme representatives!

For those particularly keen to make the most of the day and start to develop project ideas to the next stage, there will be the opportunity to discuss project concepts further in workshops with a view to a strong application submission in 2012/13.

The overall event is aimed at:
• Anyone with an interest in accessing funding for R&D demonstration and pilot projects working with European partners
• This event will be of interest to both experienced practitioners as well as newcomers to the world of FP7 who would like to find out more.
• Why not also take the opportunity to network informally with other partners from the East of England who you may be able to work with further on these topics?

Workshop: Winning FP7 Bids

FP7 proposal deadline approaching? Can’t understand the guide for applicants? Wondering if industry participation is really necessary? Can’t decide how many partners you should have in your consortium? Wondering where you can get the answers to these questions and more…?

Workshop: WINNING FP7 BIDS

Tuesday 22 May 2012 – Cambridge, UK

A winning proposal for collaborative research projects in FP7 starts with firm foundations: the right topic, a practical workplan, and a consortium that can deliver not only the scientific results but also impact on society or the economy. This workshop will explain how to prepare such a proposal.

The workshop starts with the evaluation process and criteria, the chief financial conditions including viability checks and guarantees, and rules on intellectual property rights. The main part of the day will focus on the proposal itself, showing how a well designed project and consortium will meet the evaluation criteria. Examples from real proposals will illustrate good and bad practise in presenting bids.

The workshop is aimed at researchers, research managers and advisors who have had some introduction to FP7, such as an FP7 Information Day, and now need to understand the full requirements.

If you would like more information about this workshop, please contact the organisers at: www.singleimage.co.uk.

Mission for growth to Mexico & Columbia

The European Commission will be leading a trade mission to Mexico and Columbia for businesses interested in developing their overseas market potential within high growth regions.

Vice – President of the European Commission, Antonio Tajani will personally lead the mission, he is expected to be accompanied by ambitious small and medium sized companies and representatives of leading business organisations in Europe.

The aim of the mission is to help companies and SMEs to internationalise their activities, reinforce industrial cooperation in areas such as industrial innovation, key enabling technologies, tourism, space and access to raw materials.

Mr Tajani hopes the mission will bring both positive and lasting results: "major non-EU markets with strong growth rates represent significant opportunities for EU enterprises.

“I attach particular importance to small and medium sized enterprises as they are Europe's main economic strength. To help them to better exploit their potential in the global arena is a clear priority to boost competitiveness and create employment."
